New horizons: how to celebrate the summer solstice

Summer solstice marks the start of summer (finally!), and we're ready to start 2021 afresh. So from the luxury spa retreat to the nature reserve, here's where to honour the occasion.

01

Connect with nature

Stonor Park

Buried deep in a sweeping valley in the Chiltern Hills, not far from Bicester Village, Stonor Park is the English countryside at its very best. Wander along the ‘Ladies Walk’, home to cherries and primroses, before taking the footpath opposite the house for views of the parkland and ancient herd of deer. Don’t forget to look out for the old stone circle, formed from giant boulders left behind at the end of the last Ice Age.

Hoge Kempen National Park

Lose yourself in shady forests and scenic views at Hoge Kempen National Park near Maasmechelen Village. A nature reserve with more than 12,000 hectares of protected pine forest and purple-flowering heathland, its quiet trails and mood-boosting landscape will mean you won’t want to leave.

Waldkugel Natural ForestReserve

Just 30 minutes from Wertheim Village you’ll discover Waldkugel Natural Forest Reserve. Designated a nature reserve in 2002, this magical place is kept as natural as possible to safeguard biodiversity, and as a result is home to hundreds of oak and beech trees, and numerous species of snails and butterflies.

02

Press pause

The word ‘solstice’ derives from the Latin for ‘the sun stopping, or standing still’, making this annual calendar moment a time to press pause on daily life with this pick of spas and wellness centres.

Terme Berzieri

Journey back in time to Terme Berzieri, an art deco spa dating back to 1923. Sitting in the popular town of Salsomaggiore Terme near Fidenza Village, this regional treasure is home to naturally salty spring water and a backdrop of ornate staircases, ceilings and floors, and stain glass windows and wall paintings that provide an insight into life at the beginning of the 20th century.

Elaisa Energetic Wellness

With its futuristic architecture and secluded location, Elaisa Energetic Wellness is pretty impressive from a afar – and up close, it’s no different. Marrying modern design with traditional therapies, this hidden gem is within walking distance of Maasmechelen Village, and offers soothing hot saunas, Hammams and Turkish baths, as well as a list of unique experiences (think clay sessions, ice baths and sound ceremonies!)

Kilashee Spa

Take a time out at Kilashee Spa near Kildare Village – which harnesses the power of nature, science and aromatic – where relaxation takes top priority. At this multi award-winning destination, indulge in a deep cleanse facial or warm bamboo massage, before trying the unique dry flotation therapy – an intensely relaxing treatment where 30 minutes equals three hours of deep sleep for the body.

03

Gather for a feast

Throughout history, the summer solstice has traditionally been a time for gathering with others. Whether through dancing, ritual or making flower garlands, it marks a moment to come together and celebrate a new season.

This year, make the day extra special with a summer solstice feast. To set the perfect scene, first choose an elegant selection of tableware and place plenty of colourful flowers atop a printed table cloth.

For starters try a simple lentil salad with fresh herbs before tucking into fiery grilled salmon for the main course. Choose a Swedish midsummer layer cake and a glass of rosé wine for an elegant way to end the evening.
