Introducing Roland Mouret

French luxury womenswear designer Roland Mouret, 50, was born in Lourdes, France. He attended fashion school in Paris but dropped out to work as a model, stylist and artistic director. In the hope of pursuing his design ambitions, Mouret moved to London and, with no formal training, launched his eponymous label in 1998. It was the unveiling of the now iconic Galaxy dress in 2005 that shot him to fame. Known for his use of drape, cut and intuitive understanding of the female form, Mouret doesn’t use patterns or sketches to create his designs.

This week we caught up with the designer to talk style, inspiration and how he likes to unwind...

01

You have spent so much time in the UK, do you now consider England home?

Absolutely. It is home now. I came in the late eighties to London and never went back to France to live.

02

How do you divide your time between London and Suffolk?

I have a design studio at my home in Suffolk and enjoy travelling, so it works out fine.

03

How did you get into Fashion?

I fell into it. I was a small-time kid who went to Paris and it was like everything I ever imagined; and fashion and I fell in love. People think fashion is about clothes, but I realised very quickly that is only a small part of what it is.

04

How do you feel about inclusivity and diversifying your size range?

Inclusivity is everything. My dresses actually go up to size 20 already. I have an amazing customer who I design for who is size 24 who looks beautiful.

05

If you were stuck on a dessert island, what 4 things would you bring with you?

My iPad (do I get a Wi-Fi connection included? or am I missing the point?), a crate of rosé, a fishing rod and my Djellaba (a kind of Moroccan kaftan).

06

What is the greatest love of your life to date?

My partner

07

Do you have a motto or mantra by which you live?

Life is what it is – chopped liver.

08

Who would you most like to dress, that you haven’t already?

I’ve dressed all the most beautiful women in the world, and most of them were not famous.

People think fashion is about clothes but I realised very quickly that is only a small part of what it is.
