Jewellery has the power to carry real human feeling and love

Hermione Olivia

Co-Founder of Atelier Romy

Have you always loved jewellery?

It won’t surprise you when I say - YES! I love that jewellery is so meaningful and has such sentimental value. It was the first thing I remember noticing and admiring on my Mum when I was very young. Jewellery has the power to carry real human feeling and love, it allows you to carry the people you love with you and when inherited, the connection with those you’ve loved.

I still get such a buzz with the cards we write to accompany orders - people sending jewellery to those they love for birthdays, anniversaries and as little surprises. It’s very special to be part of these moments in one’s life.

What’s your current favourite piece from AR?

I can’t go past the Leopard 1300 bangle in yellow gold. I wear it everyday. I also love its twin, the Open Leopard Ring and I love the Emerald Necklace.

How do you and Sabine work as a pair?

We work collaboratively on most elements of the business in a very happy marriage! Sabine is Creative Director and manages more of the product side of the brand which includes sampling, production and running our Atelier where we offer hand engraving, repairs, resizing etc.

I run the business side which means a lot more administrative work including our team, comm’s, press and social etc. She’s on the workbench and I’m at my computer!

Who would you most like to wear your designs?

My dream AR woman would be an independent, self made, career women who was genuinely happy in herself, living her life with passion and inspiring those around her… OR Oprah, either way!

If you could own ANY piece of jewellery in the world what would it be?

Either my Mother or Father’s watch. They’re my favourite people and I would love to have a piece of them with me always.

Tell us a bit about your Bush Fire Fund?

As an Australian, I found the Bushfires particularly devastating. Sabine has also lived in Australia and has an affection for our incredible country. She saw my upset as my home was burning and suggested we do something to help so we donated 100% of proceeds at the time to the Australian Red Cross. It is really rewarding to be able to be collaborative with our community and use our brand for good.

Is Australia still ‘home’ for you?

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to say, after 7 years in London, I have two homes… London and Sydney. It does not get better than that!

How do the Brits and Aussies differ?

I find the Aussies to be affectionate, open and generous in their demeanour. They're energetic, welcoming and happy. The Brits are slightly more reserved and have an incredible dry sense of humour which I just adore. They're also incredibly loyal. I feel the Aussies and the Brits are similar in the fact that they both have that 'keep calm and carry on' attitude, we all just get on with the show without any fuss.

What inspires you?

Creatively I’m inspired by bygone era’s. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Van Morrison and Rock and Roll, specifically the Rolling Stones. My style icon is Carolyn Bassette… and that effortless, comfortable, at times androgynous style of the 90s. Professionally, I’ve recently been working into the night because I’m watching the Michael Jordan documentary ‘The Last Dance’ on Netflix and it makes me want to do and be better.

How do you stay in shape?

I walk a lot! I also do interval training and before lockdown, I did a mix of boxing, spin and HIIT classes. I used to hate the gym and now I love training and feeling really fit. It’s also my selfish time each day - an hour away from work and emails and most importantly, my phone!

If you had a super power – what would it be?

Teleportation! I’d move around the world and see all my friends and family instantly and I’d never miss anyone’s big moments like birthday’s and weddings and family dinners!
