I feel the most joy and purpose when I’m deeply immersed in creative process

Ash Radford

Musician

01

How did you get into music?

"When I was 11 years old I started learning drums and guitar. Drums came easier than guitar for some reason, but singing and guitar became my main method of expression."

02

How do you describe your style?

"When I’m in really in the zone, creating or performing, I feel astral, and often experience an intense emotional release. Instrumentally I gravitate towards raw and analoge tools and tones."

03

What is your greatest ambition as a musician?

"To move and feel moved. I feel the most joy and purpose when I’m deeply immersed in creative process, and it’s important to me to keep my ambitions aligned with my spiritual path. My biggest live show dream is to play Glastonbury main stage at sunset, I’ve been moved to tears there more than once."

04

What comes first – the music or the lyrics?

"Music usually. But often a phrase in conversation will catch my imagination and lead to a song."

05

What is your greatest fear?

"Not living up to the expectations of the voices in my head. Ram Dass said “We're sitting under the tree of our thinking minds, wondering why we're not getting any sunshine!”. When we escape the mind, and realise we’re surrounded by magic, and there’s very little to fear."

I have a yearning for exploring warm tropical islands and living off coconuts and mangos

06

What is your signature dish?

"I love cooking, my long standing signature is pancakes. They’ve evolved over the years. Current recipe is 1/2 cup chestnut flour, 1/4 cup Teff flour, 1/4 cup Tapioca flour, 1.5 cup oat milk, tbsp chia seeds, 1 banana, lots of cinnamon, fried in coconut oil. Top it off with melted ‘OmBar Mylk’ chocolate, blueberry jam, sliced banana."

07

Who are your musical heroes?

"Kurt Cobain, Bon Iver, Jeff Buckley, Bob Marley. I’d most love to make music with Rick Rubin."

08

Night in or night out?

"IN. But during festival season, OUT. This summer is going to be interesting..."

09

What is your greatest extravagance?

"Vegan treats and my outdoor bath. I love being cozy outside in the steaming hot water while there’s a winter storm raging about me. When I’m on tour or recording away from home, if there’s a sauna/steam room around, thats where you’ll find me."

10

Where would you most like to travel to and why?

"Himalayas is on the mind at the moment, might be having just read ’Lost Horizon’ by James Hilton, the mythical story of ‘Shangri La’. But I have an equal yearning for exploring warm tropical islands and living off coconuts and mangos."

Catch Ash performing live on our Instagram on Friday 22 May from 17.30!
