The Creative Spot
Meet the designer combining luxury with conscious design
London by birth, Indian by origin, nomad by spirit: Bav Tailor is the founder and visionary behind her eponymous brand, launched during London Fashion Week in 2015. Through its creation, she sought to “shift the stereotype of eco products being cheap, hippy hemp T-shirts – instead showcasing that a luxury product can be sustainable at all levels.”
Collection after collection, she proves that “luxury can be created in a responsible manner.” She explains: “It has developed into a very personal project for me, I would say a memoir of my life voyage as well an endeavour to uphold the tradition of my grandfathers, who were great sartorialists, hence my surname.”
Fashion, for me, is the essence of living in balance with one’s inner spirit. Silhouettes that enhance movement and form a second skin, that allow the body to dance in synchronicity with the elements that surround us.
Bav’s focus on sustainability and responsibility is strong, something that flows through all the brand does. “My mantra, ‘respect your body and your sphere,’ remains the philosophy of the brand, which goes beyond fashion through a 360° conscious manifesto that supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals. [It does this] by minimising its ecological footprint through certified conscious materials, low waste design and production processes, and social and environmental responsibility.”
Behind all this, Bav’s curiosity and commitment to fashion makes her work all the more meaningful, and that’s reflected in the way she talks about the subject. “Fashion, for me, is the essence of living in balance with one’s inner spirit. Silhouettes that enhance movement and form a second skin, that allow the body to dance in synchronicity with the elements that surround us. Fashion is one of the most powerful global platforms to manifest an important message or vision.”
Each collection incorporates my vision of quintessential creations that embody free-spiritedness with an aesthetic of nonchalant empowerment.
This view has made her collections very personal, with each reflecting both her appreciation for the world around us, and her creative process. “Each collection name is inspired by my personal journey during those months of the creative process, and incorporates my vision of quintessential creations that embody free-spiritedness with an aesthetic of nonchalant empowerment,” she explains.
This year, Bav showcases her work at The Bicester Village Shopping Collection’s virtual Creative Spot. “[It] has always been an international platform to scout and showcase new generation creative talent. [I remember] my first Positive Luxury member event in the heart of London. Hearing about Bicester Village’s consolidated steps towards sustainable solutions within the industry allowed me to gain an insight into the business, aspiring me to one day be part of a responsible, forward-thinking company.”
