Your next adventure is just around the corner

In the second in our staycation series, we share how to make the most of a trip to Ingolstadt with our favourite spots to explore.

The foodie hotspot

There’s no better place to be on a hot sunny day than a traditional biergarten at Neue Galerie Das “Mo”, in the heart of Ingolstadt’s Altstadt. Make the most of the summer with a leisurely lunch under shady horse chestnut trees or use those long evenings to indulge in some hearty traditional dishes.

Famed for its ample selection of Bavarian delicacies, it’s a popular spot with locals of all ages, and even offers a programme of concerts throughout summer should you need any enticement to stay a little longer…

Fancy a day at the seaside? No need to plan a trip to the coast as Ingolstadt boasts its very own city beach that transforms into a must-visit bar as dusk falls. The Donaustrand (Danube Beach) is popular with in-the-know locals who appreciate a relaxing evening accompanied by unmissable food trucks, live DJs and regular events, all enjoyed against the backdrop of the stunning medieval city. Visit the seaside in the city from May to September, open every day depending on the weather.

Where to workout

Get to grips with a new sport this summer – and enjoy the open air too – with stand-up paddle boarding. Professional athlete Christian Eichmann (he’s also a coach with more than 25 years’ experience) offers lessons where you’ll learn the basics, build your fitness and explore some of the most beautiful spots in Ingolstadt.

The must-see park

Picnic with the planets? It’s possible in Ingolstadt’s Astronomy Park, which replicates the arrangement of the solar system to celebrate the significant astronomical discoveries made by the city’s scientists between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. Take a stroll through the compact park, which sits prettily next to the Danube, to expand your knowledge of the planets in a hidden corner of the city.

For your weekend wander

There’s no better way to uncover the secrets of the city than a meandering stroll around the narrow medieval streets and hidden biergartens of Ingolstadt’s old town. Take a guided walking tour to discover the full and fascinating history of the city’s origins and impressive fortifications.

The historic skyline provides a charming backdrop to the Klenzepark, Ingolstadt’s 20-hectare park, just a stone’s throw from the medieval centre over the River Danube by footbridge. The lush space includes an open-air stage, rose garden, meadows and waterways that invite picnicking and relaxation.

For summer fun

Beat the city heat and spend a day messing about on the water at Wake & Groove Park in Geisenfeld, just a short hop from Ingolstadt. Whether you’re a tentative beginner or an aspiring pro, you can discover the pulse-racing thrill of wakeboarding on the lake, as well as water skiing and stand-up paddle boarding. Prefer dry land? The lake park offers a range of facilities including beach soccer, beach volleyball and a spacious restaurant.
