Fashion resolutions for 2022

From shopping sustainable collections to focusing on investment buys, these are the sartorial promises to actually keep this year.

01

Prioritise longevity

There are certain designs that endure, year after year. This is especially true of a well-chosen handbag, a tailored coat, a luxurious cashmere jumper, the perfect pair of jeans or an elegant silk blouse – pieces that will see you through thousands of outfit dilemmas and trend cycles.

When it comes to choosing your forever pieces, look for quality fabrics and handcrafted finishes – good craftsmanship is priceless. Investment shopping is more sustainable too, says La Roca Village’s Jamal Sinno. “When you curate your wardrobe with this in mind, you approach all purchases as assets. Investing in one luxury handbag, with a timeless design, is much more environmentally friendly than buying five fast-fashion bags that you’ll discard the next season.”

02

Go sustainable

If there’s one positive to come out of the past two years, it’s the focus they've brought to wasteful processes. Sustainability in fashion is definitely here to stay. When you’re shopping, look out for brands that are championing incredible initiatives – whether that’s recycled fabrics, water reduction during production or innovative new materials.

From the Water<Less® initiative from Levi’s® to Maje’s First Stone denim collection, production processes are being given a rethink. Meanwhile, the likes of Timberland and PUMA are recycling plastic to create covetable sportswear collections. Timberland’s ReBOTL material contains at least 40% recycled plastic from the world’s landfills and oceans, while PUMA’s First Mile project reduces plastic environmental waste while providing sustainable jobs for micro-economies in Taiwan, Haiti and Honduras.

Elsewhere, Claudie Pierlot and HUGO BOSS – the company behind brands BOSS and HUGO – are both pledging to do more for the environment and for their people through a range of sustainable and community-based goals.

03

Shop someone else’s wardrobe

“Give vintage a try and you can find the greatest treasures,” says Jamal. “Friends and family often have long-forgotten pieces sitting unloved: your grandmother’s wardrobe could be filled with Lanvin scarves and a Boucheron watch from the 1930s.

“They could be styled them with a pair Levi’s® 501 jeans, a pair of Converse and a saffiano-leather shoulder bag."

“Or rediscover old Courreges shirts and wear them with Jacquemus high-rise trousers, a classic Hermes scarf and a pair of Adidas Stan Smith’s,” he adds. “And if you find a Hermes Kelly bag buried in the back, then you’re truly lucky: you’ll be dressed for life!”

04

Clear out consciously

How you empty your wardrobe is just as important for the environment as how you shop. We’re all for a style refresh, but be sure you’re treating your rejects with care. “It can be the most cleansing exercise ever. “But be mindful to fix or tailor what you can salvage, and donate to charity or friends what you don’t want.”

You might have out-grown a piece, but that doesn’t mean there’s not another life in it still. Look to the likes of Timberland, who’s Second Chance partnership with Soles4Souls asks people to donate their gently used shoes, whatever the brand, and shares them with countries in need.

05

Finally, have fun with it

“Fashion is about being playful, free and expressing yourself,” says Jamal. “There are no rules; instead, the key to great style is confidence and loving yourself.”

Now’s the time to enjoy your wardrobe always – forget saving things for best. “Fine jewellery isn’t just for important occasions – wear diamonds and precious gems every day to boost your mood,” he adds.

And you can still savour the same spirit in loungewear, too, he insists. “Choose pure silk pyjamas in which to binge-watch your favourite programme and throw on a wool-twill cape or double-breasted coat and a pair of sneakers should you need to venture out.

“It’s about dressing glamorously for yourself and your loved ones.”
