Levi’s® | Unleash your inner designer

The denim experts show us how to master the art of spray-dying to give a worn-out wardrobe favourite a welcome refresh.

Creating a slick, airbrushed look, spray-dying is perfect for adding a pop of colour to your pre-loved pieces. Master the technique with this simple DIY project from the geniuses at Levi’s®.

What you’ll need

  • 1 plain T-shirt
  • 3 cans of fabric spray paint in different colours
  • A thick sheet of cardboard
  • Protective gloves
  • A seven-inch record (see the tip below if you don’t have one to hand!)

What to do

Step 1: Place the piece of cardboard between the front and back of your tee to avoid colour bleed.

Step 2: Smooth the top surface and spray your first colour.

Step 3: Place the record in the centre of the design area.

Tip: The music lovers at Levi’s® chose a 45-rpm (seven-inch) record to create the two-circle pattern, but almost anything can be used as a stencil. Purchase reusable stencils online, or create your own; forage for natural elements like leaves and pine needles or simply spray over a gloved hand. If you’re up for a challenge, make intricate paper templates or ‘write’ words using strips of tape as a guide. As for fabric paint, use Marabu Fashion Spray, the apparel industry standard.

Step 4: Spray your second colour over the record.

Step 5: Spray your third and final colour into the record hole.

Step 6: Carefully remove the record and add a few more sprays if you feel like it.

Tip: To achieve colour richness and avoid drips, spray the area lightly to slowly build layers. For a cool drip effect, tilt the T-shirt slightly and watch the colour roll downwards.
