ECOALF: reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink

Ecoalf lives, wears and spreads the message: Because there is no planet B

Sustainable fashion brand Ecoalf lives by the key, concise motto ‘Because there is no planet B’. The brand’s interest in the environment took seed long before it became a trending topic, especially in the world of fashion. And they certainly can’t be accused of greenwashing: their approach to sustainable fashion means the environment is a key consideration in everything they do, from the materials and processes that are used, to their educational programmes and use of innovative technologies; Ecoalf does all this without compromising on quality, sustainability or design.

Javier Goyeneche, President and Founder of the brand, explained in 2009: “The concept of the brand emerged after the birth of my son, Alfredo (the company bears his name), when I reflected on the world that we would leave to the next generations and my frustration with the excessive use of natural resources. The idea was to create a fashion brand that was truly sustainable”.

The brand’s garments are made from recycled materials, with more than 300 different fabrics, meaning less water and energy and fewer natural resources are used in the production process, and air pollution is also reduced. They produce flip-flops from tyres, one of the most difficult materials to recycle, and footwear from ocean plastics. All of these actions have led to one of Ecoalf’s most ambitious projects for improving the health of our planet: Upcycling the Oceans. The project aims to clean the world's oceans of waste with the help of the fishing industry and give these plastics a new life by recycling and using a circular economy model. The brand even manufactures its garments in the same place where the recycled materials are found, a step which minimises damage to the environment and carbon emissions even further.

This commitment to sustainability goes further than Ecoalf’s own practices. The brand seeks to collaborate with other companies and partners to spread their values as widely as possible, so far Camper, Desigual, Starbucks® and Swatch are just some of the brands that have joined the mission. Ecoalf also supports artistic initiatives dedicated to the environment, such as the temporary exhibition Joan Jonas. Moving Off the Land II, which is currently on display at Madrid’s Thyssen Bornemisza museum, for which the brand produced an exclusive T-shirt. The exhibition shows the role that the ocean has played in our culture throughout history as a spiritual, totemic and ecological reference.

In the current climate, there’s one question on everyone’s lips: how has COVID-19 affected sustainability? Ecoalf wanted to show, or rather, wanted us to show, the positive changes that have taken place during the global lockdown periods through the power of social media. Using the brand’s hashtag #SNAPTHEWORLDECOALF the world has been able to admire animals revelling in peace and solitude in their natural habitats, undisturbed by human interference.

All of this hard work has earned Ecoalf one of the most important and coveted certifications in the world of sustainability: B Corps. This group of businesses are committed to reducing their impact on the environment and working as a force for good in society.
