An adventure through wild Madrid
Rediscover the natural beauty of Madrid on this journey through the region’s paths and trails with entrepreneur Fernando Ojeda.
By Las Rozas Village
“A weekend in Madrid can offer as many different experiences as you want – it’s a dream destination to explore,” says entrepreneur Fernando Ojeda (@fernando13ojeda), who plants trees for the (Re)Forest Project. “From relaxed corners to exciting, buzzing atmospheres, the city channels every kind of rhythm. Enjoy walks along the river or escapes to the Sierra to disconnect and enjoy the fresh air – all accompanied by the most delicious dishes and cultural fare on offer.” Here’s where Fernando recommends visiting to truly discover the unrivalled natural beauty of the region…
The banks of the River Manzanares
Running for six kilometres, straight through Madrid, the River Manzanares brings a vital thread of green space and life to the capital. On its banks sits the sustainable Madrid Río Park, offering space to wander among plants, flowers, landmark bridges, churches, new sustainable buildings and wooden recreational areas.
Explore the iconic Arganzuela, the oaks in the majestic Casa de Campo, the Puente del Rey (or King’s Bridge, built on the order of Fernando VII) or cities further afield such as Toledo. This exceptional landscape can be discovered on foot or by bike and reminds us daily of the magic of the Manzanares.

Quinta de los Molinos Park
This historical park is particularly beautiful between February and March, when its almond trees flower. But you can admire the flowers (known as the practice of ‘hanami’ in Japan) at any time of the year. Filled with olive, pine and eucalyptus trees, the park has plenty of peaceful spots in which to relax – don’t miss the lake! Meanwhile, the historical mansion in the park has been renovated to offer cultural events and dining spots, making it a dreamy garden in the heart of the San Blas-Canillejas district of Madrid.

The garden at Hotel Relais & Château Orfila
Hidden within the Hotel Relais & Château Orfila, near the bustling Plaza Colón, sits the charming terrace restaurant, El Jardín de Orfila. This calming space, with its elegant fountain, feels like a garden and manages to dull the surrounding bustle from the city, making it a perfect urban oasis for brunching or seeing friends. Its décor reflects the five-star hotel’s neoclassicist influence, while the menu is crafted by executive chef Mario Sandoval, who boasts two Michelin stars. Not to be missed!

Sierra Norte
The highlight of the Sierra Norte region is undoubtedly water – from waterfalls, rivers and reservoirs, it’s infused throughout the calming landscape. There, the Lozoya river runs, giving its name to many of the towns in its river basin including Buitrago de Lozoya, Villavieja del Lozoya and Gargantilla del Lozoya. In Gargantilla del Lozoya, stay La Hospedería del Valle: a charming restored barn that now offers boutique apartments with views of the Sierra. Inside, rustic interiors, pastel colours and details from nature make it the ideal base for exploring routes through the Sierra: from the spectacular Montejo Hayedo bathed by the Jarama to Riosequillo.
