For mini footballers

Madrid’s two major football stadiums, Santiago Bernabéu and Wanda Metropolitano, are pure joy for diminutive football fans. At the former, they’ll experience the might of the legendary team that has won the most championships in the world – an interactive tour takes in the trophy room where those 12 famed European cups are on display. Atlético de Madrid, meanwhile, shines in its new stadium, the Wanda Metropolitano where youngsters can visit the locker room and even take a trip through the tunnel and out onto the field. Tours are held on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, provided there are no matches scheduled.

For budding artists

Arguably the capital’s best museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza lays on a range of family activities on weekends: EducaThyssen offers a variety of tours through the collection followed by a workshop where children and adults alike can discover new ways to experiment with art. ‘The city for travelling families’ tour takes in the museum’s numerous exhibition areas, exploring the history of travel through different art forms. Conducted in English, the tour takes place at 11 am on Saturday and Sunday and costs €8 per person.

For small speedsters

Buckle up for a visit to Carlos Sainz Center Las Rozas, which houses the country’s very best go-karting centre. Wannabe racing drivers aged eight and over will love the indoor circuit, which uses a real-time chronometer. The centre also has a mini kart circuit for children four to seven years-olds.

For little animal lovers

In the heart of Lavapiés, La Gatoteca is a cat lover’s paradise. Housed in the headquarters for ABRIGA, an association that shelters stray cats, this café is the ideal spot to enjoy a snack while being serenaded by a choir of meows. Be warned: you may leave with a new family member!

For those who still believe in fairy-tales

Young imaginations run wild at La casita del Ratoncito Pérez, where visitors learn the story behind one of the most symbolic childhood characters in Spain: Ratoncito Pérez. Created by Luis Coloma, it’s the tale of a mouse who lived in a sweet shop on Arenal Street – a mini museum has been created on the very spot. A charming space in which to meet Spain’s most famous mouse, it also offers the chance to see the baby teeth of, among others, Ludwig van Beethoven and Isaac Newton! Insider tip: Around the corner is San Ginés Churrería, where you’ll find the best churros in Madrid.

For nature fans

Featuring 13 themed areas and four different ecosystems, Faunia is a wonderful place to learn about animals and their different habitats. The park hides tons of surprises for the smallest of the family, who will love the opportunity to feed and care for crocodiles (weekends only) or the polar trip, a unique experience at sub-zero temperatures in the amusing penguin habitat (Monday to Sunday at 3 pm).
