The secrets behind the landscaping of Maasmechelen Village

Every year, as spring comes around, Maasmechelen Village becomes an oasis of flowering plants and trees, and all in bloom.

Landscaping offers a chance to bring plants from the surrounding area into the Village, celebrating the heritage of our region for our guests, some of whom have travelled from afar. Each time our regular guests return, they can enjoy a new horticultural experience as the changing rhythm of the seasons promises new blooms, colours and shapes.

There are more than 1,000 planters and flower pots in the Village, including an array of topiaries, such as boxwood, yew, and laurel. Roses, geraniums, hydrangeas, and camellias (Coco Chanel’s favourite) are also a regular feature of the landscaping.

The landscaping offers unique Instagrammable moments for our guests to share. Favourite Instagrammable areas of the Village include the vines at the boutique of Sun Fashion Lab and the plane trees in front of Twin Set.

A team of three gardeners works three to four days a week – from the initial conception of a particular design and choosing the plants to then planting, mowing, weeding, and pruning. Indeed, there is a gardener working every day of the year. Most of their work is completed before 10 am so they don’t hinder our guests as they shop, although often many visitors, especially those that have travelled from afar, appreciate an opportunity to learn about the choice of planting.

We use rainwater to water all the plants and trees in the Village to be as sustainable as possible in our landscaping. Rainwater falls into the old mine, which is then pumped into a reservoir from where we draw our supply.

Autumn and winter are more of a challenge. During these seasons the task is to make the landscaping as engaging as it is in the summer – even though nature has seemingly fallen asleep!

For our gardeners, the best seasons of the year, as you can imagine, are spring and summer. During these times, all their hard work comes to fruition and often in the most spectacular of ways. For our gardener Laurens, the best landscaping moment is “without any doubt the pear trees in front of the Levi’s boutique. They add a sense of country chic and are a cosy touch. So beautiful and surprising.” Autumn and winter are more of a challenge. Of course, none of this would be possible without the passion and dedication of our gardeners – as well as the assistance provided by our Operations and Security teams!

We wish you all a summer of happy and productive gardening.
