Guests visiting from outside the EU can receive tax refunds on their shopping
In Germany, goods are subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) which is included in the sale price. This represents 19% of the price of your purchase.* As a non-EU resident, you can reclaim any VAT paid on goods and taken home with you, provided the claim is made within 3 months of the purchase.
How does it work?
Ask in the boutiques
Ask for a tax-refund receipt when you make a purchase of €50 or more.
Fill in your details
Add your name (exactly as it appears on your passport), address and passport number to each VAT refund form when you make a purchase.
Validate your receipts
When you leave the EU, present your completed forms, receipts, passport and purchases at the customs desk so they can validate your tax-free shopping.
Receive an instant cash refund
It is also possible to claim a refund with companies such as Global Blue and Premier Tax Free, who usually have offices at the airport and in city centres.
Present your completed VAT refund forms, passport and your credit card with at least six months’ validity to them to receive an immediate cash refund.
Remember, you’ll still need to have your VAT refund forms certified when you leave the EU within 21 days of visiting Global Blue or Premier Tax Free. If you’re on a connecting flight to another EU destination, have your form validated at your first departure point and this will be treated as EU departure point.
