Steps towards sustainability are already underway, but this fashion powerhouse has plenty more planned.

Meaningful change isn’t easy, but HUGO BOSS – the company behind brands BOSS and HUGO – is committed to achieving its sustainability mission. ‘Today. Tomorrow. Always.’ is the concept behind the company’s drive, with goals around how it creates products, supports the lives of the people who make them and reduces the environmental impact of its operations. So what can we expect?

More sustainably sourced materials

With a vegan suit and sneakers made from pineapple leaf fibres part of past collections, the brands’ are already some way towards achieving more sustainable-focused products. Collections made in line with the company’s ‘RESPONSIBLE Product Policy’ are currently crafted from a minimum of 61% sustainable materials, and, like much of the fashion industry, the company is now veering towards products made without materials of animal origin.

From design to quality, durability to innovation, HUGO BOSS applies a strict selection criteria to how something is made, striving to source the most sustainable materials, to treat them as efficiently as possible and to pay close attention to standards relating to, among others, animal welfare, species conservation and chemical management. Look out for collections made from 100% sustainably sourced cotton and leather from tanneries which comply with its sustainability standards, all by 2025.

An environmentally friendly supply chain

The company’s drive towards sustainability doesn’t stop at the product either. It’s seeking to make its supply chain more environmentally friendly too. With the vision of climate neutral fashion by 2060, it’s focused on measures such as renewable energy, sustainable architecture, careful handling of resources and ensuring that products are free from dangerous chemicals. This ethos is being spread across the whole value chain – from sites, to stores, production and logistics. So far, the company’s efforts are proving successful, with an 18% reduction in CO2 emissions and an 8% reduction in water consumption compared to 2018 levels.

A positive impact on people

Elsewhere, the company is supporting the people who develop, produce and sell its products. Through its IŞKUR job re-entry scheme, HUGO BOSS is working hard to enhance employment possibilities for women at its Izmir location in Turkey. There it trains women seeking to re-enter the workforce in the textile industry, with a view to hire them permanently whenever possible. A total of 1,479 women have now completed the scheme and are in a position to join the industry. As for the future? HUGO BOSS has big dreams: it’s aiming for 2,100 women to be supported through the programme by 2025.
